Rusty Truck Steampunk Style + So Suzy Card Challenge

Hello crafty friends,

For the first ever challenge at So Suzy - Crackerbox Palace stamps the entire design team created masculine themed cards to inspire you to play along with us.  The details on the challenge, prizes, etc. can be found on the So Suzy blog.  I chose this pick up truck stamp as my focal point and thought how fun it would be to pair it with some die cut gears and make the overall look steampunk style.

The gears were die cut from a pre-colored piece of mixed media paper that was colored with 3 distress oxide colors- cracked pistachio, spice marmalade and walnut stain.  I used the technique popularized by Tim Holtz by putting the colors down onto the craft mat, spritzing with water, and dabbing the paper onto the color.  I kept drying the paper between color applications to build up layers and interest.  After the paper was completely dry I die cut as many of the gears from this set as I could fit onto the 4.25" x 5.5" piece of media paper.

I added a little of the same color to the kraft card base so it wasn't starkly different from the gears.  I used the same method to color it but just barely added some color.

I stamped the truck onto a separate piece of the same mixed media paper, then used the same distress oxide colors to "paint' the truck.  I put the colors onto a palette and used a water brush to randomly paint the colors onto the truck.  The tires were colored with black soot distress ink and the hubcaps and bumpers were colored the same way with this metallic stain from Ranger.

I glued the gear die cuts - concentrating them in the bottom left and top right corners of the kraft card base.  I splattered some Distress ink in black soot with a paintbrush over the entire panel.  I found the precision base plate helpful with the Big Shot to ensure the detailed dies cut out well.

I fussy cut the truck and popped up on some foam tape.  The sentiment was stamped onto the same mixed media paper and colored in a similar manner as the truck.  I die cut the sentiment and glued to the card base.

And there is my card!  It was easier than I thought to create this cool rusty looking truck and hope you will link up to the challenge - you have a whole month to do so!

See ya next time!
