Trick or Treat - chalkboard style

Hello crafty friends,

Halloween is just around the corner.  I love making cards for this occasion and lucky for me that Crackerbox & Suzy stamps released some really fun new Halloween stamps, including a witch's hat, a broom, potion bottles and the pumpkin just to name a few.  The ghost and sentiment I used are from a prior release.  This ghost is one of my favorites with that really funny expression - makes me think of Ghostbusters lol.

After considering many possible ways to use these stamps I decided it would be fun to create a chalkboard like background by using black cardstock and colored pencils as the coloring medium.  First I stamped all the images (except the sentiment) onto the background with Versamark embossing ink, then added some white embossing powder and heat set.  I did treat the paper with an antistatic tool and although some white specks remained, it really added to this design because chalkboard is not perfectly black after you've used chalk on it.

I used Prismacolor pencils on each image, starting with white as the base coat, before adding the colors on top.  This makes a big difference in making the color pop against black.  I wasn't going for perfect coverage here because I wanted the chalkboard look.  If I had wanted to smooth it out I would use Gamsol to blend the pencil, so that's an option if you prefer that look.

The sentiment was stamped with Versamark and heat embossed with white embossing powder onto the same cardstock, die cut and popped up on the base layer.  I trimmed around the edges to leave a little border when the layer was glued onto a white card base.

During October there are some sales you might want to take a look at, especially for the Halloween and Holiday stamps. course the stamp of the month at 50% off.
